Week 5: Design
This week’s theme was design. We learned and utilized multiple design elements in a designblitz. We were required to do 3 daily creates and complete 12 stars of design assignments as well!
So i’ll start with our analyzation of a movie. I watched Double Indemnity. It was a 1940’s film that in my opinion idolizes the idea of Noir, and was a perfect example for our design ideas. I saw multiple design elements but the most relevant one i saw was the use of distinct shadows, which is more of a visual element but in the sense of a movie set I think it is part of design. You can read my full analyisis and write up in my thoughts and ideas page or by clicking HERE!
Next i’ll cover the designblitz. We had to find examples of different design elements. I had a good idea of what i wanted to use as my examples and just had to wait until I went home this weekend to capture most of them. I also had an issue because i couldn’t find the one example i wanted and i couldn’t find another element and it was sunday night at this point so i had to use the internet (sad face). This was pretty fun though, i like having to do like little scavenger hunt like things!
The assignments for this week were really fun! The design assignments really made you be creative but they were all about making something by hand using your imagination in all of them.My favorite was was doing the banner for 4 stars. I got into making little banners when facebook made it a big thing a few years ago, so this was kind of nostalgic. But of course i had to make my banner about America because i love America! I even tried to add my banner to my page but it just doesn’t quite work with my theme… Another assignment i did was the light switch drawing. I made a rhinoceros using a light switch. I had trouble thinking what to make with this one, i originally thought of a unicorn but i am such a terrible artist that it came out looking more like a rhino. That was worth 3.5 stars. the last assignment i did, (actually the first speaking chronologically but whatever) was The Ultimate Merger. This required us to merge the logos of 2 companies as if they actually merged together. I merged Starbucks and Peet’s Coffee. the funny thing is i used starbucks twice this week but didn’t even drink any starbucks myself. Using starbucks in this assignment was the inspiration for using Starbucks in my design blitz!
We had to do 3 daily creates this week. I have been trying on top of those and checking each day so i don’t get stuck doing hard ones, but this week all the ones early in the week didn’t appeal to me so i ended up having to do all of the ones from this weekend. But all the ones this weekend were pretty fun! The first one was making an old time radio commercial, i connected this with Geoffry Cunningham by making an advertisement for his investigation show!! On saturday i was surprised that the daily create didn’t have anything to do with valentine’s day, but it was fun though! we had to play an old time arcade game and record ourselves doing it! I played a racing game, didn’t do too well, but it was fun! I had a hard time recording it but i eventually found a screen capture software and used that, i actually ended up deciding to keep the software because it might become useful later on. Today’s daily create was to play with our food, really that’s what it said! Actually, we were to make some sort of clothing with it, i decided why not make an earring with a smartie and some tape?
on another note, i looked at the weather forecast and decided that there is very little chance we have classes on tuesday, they are calling for 6-8 inches of snow and i am really hoping they aren’t wrong, again… But on twitter i designated Tuesday as the official ds106 get work done day!!
Snow storm Tuesday… That means Tuesday will be spent doing all my #ds106 assignments!!!
